Sidequests: 1
You can either go back to Drogen and stock up on supplies, or head to Winlan. Whenever you are ready to head to Winlan, go back to the spot where Nanai once was. From here, just continue on northeast, where you'll eventually spot the kingdom of Winlan. One thing to note is that you have a very valuable item in your inventory- the E. Key. This item can be used in battle once per round, to deal 30HP damage vs. all enemies. No enemy can survive this kind of attack this early in the game- for their HP aren't that high. The reason why it is good to use, especially vs. groups, is that it will wipe out an entire group in one round, thus netting you more EP and GP! The less attack rounds it takes to end a battle, the more EP and GP gained. Well, after you've had your fun experimenting with the E. Key, and EP and GP gain, head to Winlan located around the northeast.
Winlan Kingdom TreasuresItem ShopWeapon Shop |
This is the first kingdom you've been to in the game that hasn't been destroyed! It's also pretty big in size. There's a lot of treasures to find, most in Castle Winlan. I'm just going to give you directions at sites to see, and what not. You can talk to anyone you want to while using these directions. If you decide to explore some empty houses, you'll find fruit and fish. The fish restores 10HP. You'll notice when you enter the kingdom of Winlan, you'll see three buildings, from left to right: An Inn, Dragon Shrine, and empty building. I would recommend resting at the Inn if you are low on health, though you can repeatedly eat fish and fruit to recover HP for FREE. Also note that their is no one around to talk to at night, so that may be another influence on whether to rest. Whatever you decide, visit next to the Dragon Shrine to save. There's nothing in the empty building to the right, so head up the staircase you see by the Dragon Shrine. From the staircase, choose to head far east, and you'll come to a small building. Enter the building and grab a V. Ptn (raises Vigor +1!) from the cabinet in the back. Once you exit the house, head west and you'll eventually come to a Weapon and Item Shop. You should not go buy anything right now, for there is an intermission that is about to take place. Go up the staircase, or ramp, by the Item Shop. The buildings you see contain mostly fish and fruit. You can explore them if you like or go converse with the people you wish to talk to. Once you've had your little social fun, head far north and you'll eventually spot Winlan's Castle. Before going off and running through the doors of the castle, notice that there's a path into the water by the entrance to the castle. If you go in the water, and walk towards the waterfall, it'll carry you off, out of town. No, I'm not telling you to jump into the water, and drown yourself just because you're afraid of how big Winlan Castle looks. The waterfall exit is just a pretty fast way to exit town; use it when necessary. When you're ready, enter Winlan Castle. The main objective in the castle is to talk to the white-clothed lady directly north of the entrance to the castle. When you do, a short scene will take place with her and a woman in pink. The woman in pink is named Nina. She and the white-clothed woman talk about some sort of 'remedy', dealing with the king. After their conversation, Nina walks up the stairs, and the white-clothed lady asks the guard to find Nina some support. The guard unhesitantly agrees. The white-clothed lady then directs Ryu to a bedroom, where our young hero shall fall asleep into slumber land. The sleeping tune plays, and it is now time to control the destiny of Princess Nina.
Winlan Castle's Treasures |
You now have control of the princess of Winlan! All of Ryu's stuff have converted to her inventory (how Nina got Ryu's things is still a mystery to me). Before we start talking about how good her combat skills are, let's start grabbing the numerous treasures you can find throughout the castle. I suggest heading a far southwest from the room you appear in to find the king laid on the bed. If you talk to the people around the king, you'll learn about a poisoned letter sent from Zog, leader of the Dark Dragons, and this place called Karma. After you are done conversing with the people in the room, head back far east and go down the stairs you see. Once you reach the lower floor, head west where you'll spot four chests with a door blocking entry. The four chests contain a total treasury of: A Herb, Antdt, SuedeSH, and SuedeHT. Immediately equip the SuedeSH and SuedeHT when you get them. At this point, go back to the area with the white-clothed woman, and head north of that area. When you reach the two fountains, head east. Now you have a choice of whether to head north, up the stairs, or south, to the two chests. Now I hope you are not that lazy to go south and grab those two chests containing two Herbs! Unless you want to pay 20GP outside in the item store for two extra Herbs, go grab those chests! Afterwards, head north, up the stairs you see ahead. Travel far southwest from the staircase to encounter two chests. The top one contains an Antdt while the bottom, a Herb. You have now collected all the treasures accessible in Castle Winlan. You'll notice the people on this floor say different things to you compared in the day, than at night. Exit Castle Winlan when you have finished with all your business. There's really no reason to go off visiting the Weapon Shop, for Nina's attack is still weak regardless if you equip her with the BronzRP. It is better to use the E. Key as an attack for her, since it is a fast and easy kill all the enemies in battle. What you should visit is the Item Shop. You'll notice that on the right side, inside of the shop, is an area marked with a chest. This is called the Storage. You can store items you do not wish to hold, as well as money, for less consequences if you should happen to perish. Usually, when your party gets totally wiped out by an enemy, you reappear back at the Dragon Statue with some loss of money. If you store money in the Storage, that money will not be affected by the loss. The only thing that can change the amount of money you have in the Storage is either you removing or storing money from and to the Storage. The Storage's use in the game should always be considered before you leave for a dungeon, in the event you want to withdraw/store money or certain items. As for the Item Shop, you should buy a couple of Herbs, and some Antdts if you're out of them. When you are done shopping around and talking to people, exit Winlan.
You'll find Nina isn't a very strong fighter, so you should substitute her attack with the E. Key, dealing 30HP damage vs. all enemies. Though she has a pretty weak physical attack, you'll notice that Nina has spells!! Now I know you're probably wondering if it's attack spells. Unfortunately, they are not. The spells she starts out with are Cura, which heals HP for 3AP, Fort, which raises defense for one ally (6 ap), and Heal, which, for 5AP, cures a character of any status ailments. Acorns can recover a person's AP, so you should carry a few of those around. The spells mentioned before aren't really used all the time, but they are pretty useful in dire situations. Fort is really useful vs. a boss that uses physical attacks. Always place Nina in the back row, to protect from her relatively low defense. Though her attack is lowered, it doesn't matter, for it is pretty weak as it is. You can revisit Camlon to pick up some nifty items. A more detailed description of the visit is written here. If you don't care to lose a few 'unique items', as well as cheap item prices, then continue on.
Travel to the west of Winlan, where you will spot a cave. This cave leads to Romero, further trailing to a forest onward to Karma, the place Nina is bound for. Enter the cave, and prepare to do some monster bashing.
When you try to head north from the entrance, two Winlan soldiers will stop you, and offer you assistance. You have to say yes no matter what, or the conversation will keep dragging on. Once you have said yes, continue on north, go up the slope you see, and down the stairs. Go down the next stairs you see. You'll now be in a pretty large area. The enemies you fight in this area are basically the same as the ones you fought with Ryu in Nanai Dungeon. The Creep, Beaks, and Glooms team up once again. The Glooms won't have much of a chance to use their You are finally back outside! All you have to do now is head to Romero, located to the west.
There are two different scenes to be seen and people you can talk to depending on the time of day you visit. If you visit in the day, people will be talking about how the dead rise at night and things related to that. If you take a look at the landscape, it is all gray and drained of life. This has to be the work of the Wizard in Karma! Try visiting the town at night, where you'll find the dead roaming around the town. You can speak to each one of them and learn about how it was possible for them to come back to life. It seems a bit strange their appearance is normal of that of a living person's. However, some of the dead mention about how they feel strange. Once you've done these little social quests, you should go save at the Dragon Shrine right near the graveyard entrance. The Inn is also accessible, so rest there if you are feeling weary. Even if you aren't tired, visit the Inn to grab a L. Ptn in the drawer at the back. After you have saved, grabbed the L. Ptn, and have rested, head a short north from the Dragon Shrine and Inn to find a row of buildings. Starting from the left to right are as follows: an Item Shop, empty house with fruit, and another house with special treasure. Go to the Item Shop and buy plenty of Herbs, Antdts, and Acorns if you have the money to do so. Store anything you want to in the Storage as well. You can skip the middle house and head towards the far right house. Go down the hole you see in the house. From where you land,
you'll see a safe to the northeast, which you cannot open now. To the west, you'll spot some jars. If you talk to the people in the room they will talk about this Map. Go back to the jars, and position yourself to the right of the first jar. Push the jar to the left. Then go up and push the jar north of you to the north. Finally, push the jar to the west of you, left. Go about a short northwest of your location to find a barrel. Push the barrel in any direction, and press the talk key, standing in the area the barrel used to lie on. You'll get the Map! Head south, down the room, and exit up the stairs. To use the Map, simply press the start button. You can move your view throughout the Map using the directional buttons. Afterwards, reenter Romero, but this time, go past the rows of houses you visited. The last row you see consists of four houses. They are, from left to right: The Weapon Shop, empty house, empty house, and a house with a ProtnB. The only thing I suggest buying from the Weapon Shop is the Gown for Nina. It's pretty expensive, but not as expensive as the SilkGN, which has a lower defense and heavier weight compared to that of the Gown's! Why the SilkGN is so expensive, yet not very good compared to a cheaper product, still eludes me. Don't bother buying anything for the soldiers. They don't really need armor since their defense is pretty good as it is. Grab the ProtnB in the far right house. You can check out the houses in the middle if you wish. Once you are done with your preparations, begin heading towards the western side of town. You'll see a small house of some sort which contains pigs. There's no point in entering that building as there are nothing but piggies. Just keep on heading west, till you exit the gloomy town of Romero.
Just continue on west from Romero. You should eventually come across a path of trees, where you will be able to enter.
The Map of the Forest to Karma
This is probably the first time you've been in a forest in Breath of Fire 1. The enemies here aren't quite harsh. Two of them are familiar enemies while one is new. The newest and stronger enemy you may encounter is the Spider, which has about 32HP. One use of the E. Key, along with an attack by Sr-1 or Sr-2 will wipe it out quickly. It gives a pretty good amount of EP and GP, alone. It often drops either a Life, or a DkKiss. You can sell the DkKiss if you end up with having too many of them. If you find two Spiders, and defeat them in one round, using the E. Key and the Sr-1's and Sr-2's attacks, you'll get the best gain you can find in the forest: a whooping 60EP and 72GP! If you find two P. Bugs along with a Spider and defeat them in one round, you gain 45EP and 72GP. Though it may not give as much as the two Spiders in one shot, the chances of encountering two P. Bugs with a Spider are better than finding two Spiders alone. So in the long run, you can gain a lot from two P. Bugs along with a Spider compared to two Spiders. You can also find a Creep wandering alone here, which is simple to kill. You could level up here if you wanted to, since you can recover HP from the red mushrooms infinitely (though the recovery is only 10HP and you have to switch characters to heal each one). Just be sure not to try eating the yellow mushrooms, they damage you by 10HP. Now that you know all the monsters there are to know in the forest, head a bit west from the entrance and take a path north, once you approach it. You should be able to find a chest with a Herb in the area. You'll spot some yellow mushrooms, which you should not eat. Head back down the path and continue on west, after grabbing the Herb. You'll eventually spy two paths. Head down the south path and go west in the area. You will come across a chest with a Bandage. Equip it on Nina. Head back to the fork in the road, and head north. You'll see two paths in front of you. One continues on north, while the other heads west. Take the northern path, and you should come across another fork in the road. One leads west, while the other leads northeast. If you head west, you can grab yourself a Herb. There's a chest with 150GP on the northeastern route. All you have to do is just enter the path, go up a little, and head a bit west. You will eventually come to the chest with the 150GP. Once you've gotten both, one, or none, of the two treasures, then just head back down, south. Pass the western route you followed earlier and keep heading south. You'll be back at the fork in the road where you had the decision to go north, or west earlier. This time head west until you exit the forest.
Karma is to the west of where you come out. It's smack-dad in the middle of a lake. This is what you have been traveling for. Do not let evil prevail! Go into the tower, and be ready to kick some monster butt!
You have finally reached Karma! The enemies on the first floor are exactly the same as you met in the forest. You can wipe out P. Bugs by just using the E. Key. Creeps are pretty easy to take down without any particular strategy, while Spiders, though a bit harsher, can be wiped out pretty easily. This is basically it for the enemies on the first floor. Head north from the entrance, and stop in the middle of the intersection. If you look to the north, you will spot a staircase heading down. There are also two Dragon Fountains, one to the northeast, another to the northwest. Two paths exist to the east and west, as well. Head down the staircase you can see to the north of the intersection. You'll see a ton of bones down here, as well as two chests, one to the east, the other to the west. Both contain Herbs. Once you are done grabbing the contents, walk across the bones, and go back up the stairs. This time, go west, into the western passageway from the intersection. Keep heading west, and go north once you are able to. You'll eventually see two paths, one leading south, while the other, east. Take the south path, and follow it to find a staircase leading up. Once you climb the stairs, open the chest you see for a M. Drop. This item is very valuable. When used, it heals the party of all status abnormalities and restores all HP. I would keep these near the mid/late-game half, for you will probably need them. Go back down the stairs, and head south, then a bit west. Now go north and you'll be back in a familiar area. This time, head east, and go south when you can. You'll soon see two paths heading south. Follow the path closest to the outer wall. Following this should lead you to another M. Drop. After you've tucked the it in a safe place, go back up north, and head into the inner southern path you had passed earlier. You should spot this blue reaper-like creature. Heal at the Dragon Fountain if you need to, and make sure you are at least Level 6. Upon talking to the creature, it will shout at you to "go away" and then a battle will commence.
Morte has about 140HP, though I've heard it's about 120HP. For the battle strategy, have Nina cast Fort on each of the characters, preferably Nina first, in the beginning. Then have her cast ATK-up on both of the soldiers. This should increase the damage dealt to Morte by each of the soldiers to 15HP damage. Using the E. Key with one of the soldiers helps greatly. Nina will probably be the only person faster than Morte, so have her heal the party. Even with Fort in effect, Morte can do 10HP damage vs the soldiers and Nina. Morte only has his physical attack to depend on, so that's a pro of this battle. Heal a character if he/she's HP gets as low as 15HP, just to be on the safe side. If Nina has nothing to do, then have her use the E. Key for extra damage vs Morte. Once the message 'Morte began crying' pops up, it's only a matter of one use from the E. Key, or one hit from a soldier to finish Morte off. You get 280EP/200GP for your troubles. Not bad for an easy enemy.
Heal at the Dragon Fountain, and go up the stairs Morte was blocking. You'll meet Beaks as well as Glooms on this floor, which should be easy to kill. From the staircase, head one space east, three spaces south, three spaces east, and five spaces north. You can either go down the south path, or towards the western one. Head down the southern path first. You will eventually see two staircases. Take the staircase leading downstairs. Open the chest you find for a Charm. Go back up the stairs, and take the other staircase you passed earlier. Open the chest you find for a Cure. Afterwards, go back down the stairs, and head back up north. Take the western path this time, and go south when you can. Head up the next staircase you come across. Head north from the stairs you come out of and head west, and go south when you can. Keep zigzagging through the walls, where you should come across a chest with another Charm. Go back and head east this time. Just follow the path that heads down south and eventually, to a staircase. Once you are downstairs, head north from the stairs, and climb up the staircase, ignoring the holes. Open the chest you see upstairs for a Herb. Go back down the stairs, and drop down the hole to your right. Go up the stairs you see in the room. Go south from the staircase and enter the next flight of steps you see. You should spot another reaper, but first, go down the staircase, as well as the next. Open the chest you find for a Life2. Go back up the stairs to the floor with the reaper. Make sure you're at full HP, and recover any AP if necessary. When you're ready, go talk to the creature to learn that Morte was his brother! Prepare for combat!
You can heal if you want, but the gas has taken its toll. None of your attacks will hurt the Wizard! After four rounds, Nina will ask one of the soldiers to go get help!
One of the soldiers and Nina will distract the Wizard to let another escape! Once the soldier leaves, the Wizard gets angry and decides to finish the princess and her guard.
The Wizard is still immune to your attacks. However, he will attack you with his spells which will literally destroy your party!

Cave's Treasures
T. Bolt spell if you take them out first with Sr-1 and Sr-2 (names of the soldiers). Sr-1 usually attacks first, while Sr-2 always attacks first. One thing to remember about EP and GP gain is that the number of EP you see gained is divided by the number of people left standing at battle's end. So if you gain 12EP from a Beak, that total is divided by the number of party members still alive. So the more party members in a battle alive at the end, equals a less EP amount for all. Enough chatting! From the stairs, go down the slope and open the chest you can see to the east for a Cure! You should now have two of these little handies in your inventory, assuming you didn't use the first one you found in Nanai Dungeon (if you did, shame on you!). East of that chest, and you'll find a split in the path. Head down south first, and pick up the two chests see. The one on the bottom level contains a SuedeGN, while the chest at the top contains 150GP. Equipping the SuedeGN on Nina improves her ACT dramatically. She'll now be faster than the enemies! One use of the E. Key from her equals defeat of all enemies! Once you've calmed down from this climatic moment, go back to the intersection, and head north this time. You'll eventually see two chests- one to the east, while the other, to the west. It does not matter which one you pick first. Make sure to open the western chest for an I. Ore, an item you will need later on. The eastern chest contains 70GP. Now, after opening the chests, go back to the staircase in which you came from. Head north from the staircase and cross the bridge you find. Open the chest you come across as you head up for a Herb. Head east from the chest, and cross another bridge, and then up north across another bridge. Head down the slope you see to the west, and down the next slope you come across. Open the chest for a Herb. Go back up the slope, continue heading west, past the first slope you see, and then go down the next slope you come across. Head north of the slope to find a chest containing a B. Stn, which you should save. Now go back to the first slope you passed earlier. Continue on up the stairs you see. From here, head north. When you see stairs located to the east, high tail it to the west to find a chest containing a C. Stn. Now go back east, and climb the stairs. Head south from the stairs you climbed up to exit the cave.

Aftermath
After Nina and the soldier are defeated, the scene wil shift to the other soldier. He will be at the top, followed by the Wizard! The soldier quickly escapes, but is seen being chased by the Dark Dragons. However, he will make it back to Castle Winlan and tell the others about the Wizard and Nina's capture before he perishes. The scene will then shift to Ryu. A soldier will come to Ryu and ask him for help in rescuing Nina. After you say 'yes', he'll tell you to meet the rescue party outside. You should buy a ChainML for Ryu, and any needed supplies from the item shop. Also, store anything that is not needed. Save at the Dragon Shrine, and when you're ready, exit Winlan.
Talk to the red soldier you see, and he'll give you a ride to Karma! If you haven't realized, the adult Windians can fly! They will be intercepted by three Dark Dragons. Don't worry though, the three support troops will cover you. You will eventually reach Karma.
You'll land on top of the tower. You have the soldier's aid for the time being. Head down the staircase. On the next floor, heal and save. Your main objective is to reach the area where you met the Wizard before, with Nina. If you meet a group of enemies, just use the E. Key to wipe them out easily. When you reach the stairs to the room where Nina was battling the Wizard, the soldier will leave your party because he cannot face the Xeon Gas. He wishes you luck, and then you go down the stairs automatically. The Xeon Gas is still in effect, but does not affect Ryu. You'll meet groups of enemies which you can defeat single-handedly with the E. Key. The only new enemy that is tough and has more HP than any enemy in here is the Zard. It gives about 78EP/58GP if you can defeat it in about two rounds. Using the E. Key twice should take care of it. Head down south from the stairs. Once you see a path west, take it. Pass the middle route you see up ahead and keep heading west. Once you can't proceed further west, head north, where you'll find a chest with the Rang. If you have the LongSD, you'll notice it has less attack power. However, it hits all enemies in battle, making it worth it. Once you've equipped it, head back down south, and take the middle route you skipped earlier. Before you head up the steps, make sure you are fully healed. When you are ready, head up the steps to meet the Wizard. He'll comment on how you're part of the dragon clan, and the Xeon Gas does not affect you. Combat will then initiate!
The Wizard has two spells he can use on you, as well as a support spell to back himself up. He has around 190HP or so, and will usually cast T. Bolt, doing 10HP damage to you. Sometimes, he will cast Freeze, which can take off a damaging 15HP in one shot. Adding to the fact he attacks first, you should heal when you HP is around 22 or so. The last spell he can cast is Fort, which will lessen your attacks quite a bit (Fort raises Def. by 20%). For this reason, it would be best to use the E. Key all throughout this battle, for it ignores defense. It'll do a solid 30HP no matter what, bringing the Wizard to his knees in no time. When the 'Wizard grinned fearlessly' comes up, hit him with one more E. Key blast to wipe his second wind off of existance! You'll gain 1000EP/700GP from this battle, which is not too shabby.
You will get the Remedy after this battle. Nina will then walk up to you and give her thanks. She will then collapse, where you will carry her upstairs. Nina and the soldier will give their thanks once again on the roof. Since Nina is not an adult, she can't fly just yet. The soldier will then give you a ride back to Winlan. Hop on and enjoy the ride!
Enjoy the ride back to Winlan as the other Windian birds fly in a celebration formation- signaling the success of Nina's rescue. Once you land, Nina will automatically go see her father, with you following in after her.
You will appear back in Castle Winlan. Head to the King's bedroom, where you will find Nina by her father's side. Talk to her to set off a scene where the King will rise and jump up and down on his bed! Talk about energy! The King will thank Ryu and ask him what he would wish to have. Ryu will tell him he wants permission to cross the bridge, heading into the eastern lands. The King will allow Ryu to cross the bridge, where Nina will ask Ryu to join him. A short dialog between Nina and the King will then take place. The conversation ends in Nina joining Ryu on his quest! After that, you are free to head into the eastern lands. Once you've bought supplies and have saved, head into Winlan Castle's basement. Head down south from the stairs and take the second hall east. Talk to the green-suited guards and they will allow you passage. You can't open the safe containing the four treasures ahead yet, so just exit on east. Cross the long bridge where you will enter a new land!
